Joint wear follows the load. When a joint is asked to move in ways it wasn't built for, it wears faster. Here's how we ease arthritis pain by changing what the joint carries.
Book a SessionStiff in the morning. Achy after a long day. Knees that complain on stairs, hands that don't want to open a jar, hips that take a minute to get going. You've probably been told it's arthritis and it comes with age.
Age is part of it. But it isn't the whole story.
Two people the same age can have very different joints. One reason is how force moves through the body.
When a joint sits slightly off center, the load lands on one edge of the cartilage instead of spreading across the whole surface. When a joint is forced to twist when it was built to hinge, the surfaces grind and shear. Over years, that's where wear shows up first.
Arthritis doesn't happen at random. It happens where force has been mismanaged the longest.
Some people with severe wear on their X-ray have very little pain. Others with mild changes hurt every day. That's because pain isn't only about the cartilage. It's also about the muscles guarding the joint, the tissue around it, and how sensitized your nervous system has become.
We can't rebuild worn cartilage. But we can often change those other pieces. One patient we worked with had a hip that imaging called "bone on bone." Once the stiff spine above it started rotating again, the hip wasn't forced to twist so much, and their pain dropped enough that they cancelled a planned replacement. The cartilage didn't change. The load did. Read about hip pain.
A 2021 research review looked at low-level laser and LED therapy for common musculoskeletal pain, including osteoarthritis. It concluded the treatment was a safe, drug-free, noninvasive option for both acute and chronic pain. A separate review of knee arthritis found that in the highest-quality studies, adding laser to an exercise program gave extra benefit for pain and function.
In our office, super pulsed cold laser is used to calm the inflammation and guarding around a joint so the surrounding muscles can let go.
We look at the joints above and below the one that hurts, because that's usually where the extra load comes from.
Laser helps settle inflammation and quiet the protective tension around the joint.
Hands-on work helps the joint sit closer to center, so force lands across the whole surface again instead of one worn edge.
Your protocol is matched to your healing phase, and your starting session count comes from our Decade Rule.
If you've been told it's just arthritis and there's nothing to do but wait, an assessment can show what's loading the joint and what can still change.

They need care from your doctor or rheumatologist. If you have one of these, we can work alongside that care to help with comfort and stiffness, but we don't replace it.
